How a Platelet Rich Plasma Treatment Works

Immediately before a dental procedure, Dr. Scott draws a small amount of the patient's blood.
The blood is processed on site in the Springhill Dental Health Center in a centrifuge unit, and the Platelet Rich Plasma is removed.
A sterile membrane or gauze is then saturated with the Platelet Rich Plasma and applied to the wound or surgical site for approximately 15 minutes. PRP can also be mixed with bone grafting material for enhanced healing.
The treatment results in almost instantaneous clotting and reduces the risk of infection and dry sockets, a painful condition resulting in the failure of blood to clot in an extraction or surgical site.
Since the patient is using his or her own blood and plasma, the treatment is completely safe. There is no need to fear any disease transfer as the patient only receives their own Platelet Rich Plasma taken minutes prior to surgery.
